After losing my mind trying to upload the screengrabs, I lost it a second time trying to upload an avatar. 
Please feel free to upload one, it's easy to do. You need an image no bigger than 150 x 150 pixels. Click on Profile, at the top of the screen, then click on avatar on the left side column. It will ask you to select a file then.

What do those "respect" and "positive" things under the avatars mean? Are those the equivalent of likes or good reps? And if so, how do you give them?

YES they are. You are a genius!!! I've given you and Kizz some of these reps/likes things. There's a small sort of plus sign next to where it says 'positive' and 'respect' and you can click it. You need 10 posts to do this.
